What’s your Internet Presence?

Do you know what you internet presence is?  What I mean is, do you know how your name and personal information is being used on the internet?  Here's what you do – I'll use myself as an example.

Let me Google myself

Now scroll through the entries and make sure you're not surprised by anything you find.  Looking through these results, I'm satisfied that nothing too personal is revealed. Sure, there are other people with my name but nothing stands out as being a mistake, an error or someone trying to pretend to be me.

But, when I searched my full legal name, I did find a surprise.

I had a WhitePages listing that shared way too much information including my home phone number and home address!!  This isn't uncommon but can and should be fixed because it won't go away by itself.  I immediately found out how to remove that information from WhitePages themselves.

It may take some time for search engines like Google and Bing to remove these results so check after a few days.

You might even learn something about your privacy settings on other websites.  Photos and albums may appear in results to everyone that you had meant to keep private.

This is just one example of why it's important to know your internet presence.  It's doubly important if you're a minor or have kids.  Google them and make sure everything's on the up and up.
