Do you have a Gmail account? Then this post is for you. Google has introduced a new “feature” that allows anyone with a Google+ profile to email you. Yup, that is right. Your family, your friends, and even strangers can now email you at your Gmail account.
The news was released yesterday on Gmail's blog. The idea is that people with Google+ accounts will be able to email each other just by knowing their Google+ name. If someone sends you an email, do not panic. They do not have your email address. To be clear, your actual email address will not be seen by anyone unless you send an email out. The only way they will get your email address is if you email them back.
I understand Google is unrolling this feature with the best of intentions, but it is just not for me. Similar to their unveiling of the new inbox categories, I have no desire to use this new feature.
Your settings are made to allow ANYONE ON GOOGLE+ to email you, by DEFAULT. But just like those pesky inbox categories, you can change that. 🙂 Log in to your Gmail account and then follow the directions below:
- Go to the gear in the right hand corner of the gmail window.
- Click on Settings
- Under the General Tab, scroll to “Email via Google+” and select your choice. Your options are: Anyone on Google+ (default), Extended Circles, Circles or No One.
- Once you've made the change, scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.
And that's it. 🙂 If you do not see the “Email via Google+” option then check again in a few days. This new feature is being released over time so some may get it sooner than others. And if you have multiple Gmail accounts, you will need to do this for each one….unless you want this feature in which case, why are you still reading this post. 😉
Bonus: If you want to get rid of your Inbox categories (Social, Promotions), just go back to Gmail->Settings and click on Inbox. Then customize your inbox as you like. I removed all those categories so I only have a Primary category, which is just the regular old inbox.
You Ought To Know: Anyone with Google+ can email you unless you change your settings.
