Film Friday: The Blind Side

Something about a movie being based on a true story sets it apart from everything else. We, the audience, hold the film in higher esteem. We pay more attention to it. Our opinion of the film changes. What was just any other story has become something new in our eyes, something inspiring. Look at what this person has done! Look at what they went through, where they are now! Oftentimes biographical films have a greater effect on the viewer and one such example of this is the 2009 film The Blind Side.

Based on a true story, The Blind Side follows Michael Oher, who once homeless and impoverished, became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.

The Blind Side has an incredible story. Watching Oher go from homelessness to being one of the most sought after prospects in college football is simply awe-inspiring. The film holds a powerful message of compassion and showcases what an individual can truly accomplish when given a chance. The true story of Oher and his adoption by the Tuohy family is one definitely worth checking out as well.

Sandra Bullock plays the matriarch of the Tuohy family, Leigh Anne Tuohy. The role earned Bullock the Academy Award for Best Actress and well deservedly so as Bullock's performance is what really drives the film. The strength and genuine care she brings to the role pushes the film forward and adds an even greater dynamic to Oher's story. Bullock is a marvel to watch.

The film is not without its weaknesses though. Besides the inspirational story of Oher and Bullock's performance, other aspects of the film such as the script fall short. Nevertheless The Blind Side is a film that I would definitely recommend to anyone. I watched it at a young age and remember being profoundly affected and humbled by Oher's journey. I appreciate the film even more now as I watch it again and see the impact it can have on the viewer. The Blind Side is a classic biographical sports film with an inspiring story and great performances led by the formidable Sandra Bullock. Audiences are sure to enjoy the film and appreciate its message of compassion and the journey of Michael Oher.

On the Ticket Stub Love meter, I give The Blind Side 4 out 5 ticket stubs.
